04. What is the best age for students to learn abacus?

The best time (for a student) to begin learning abacus is between age six to ten. Students/children under six are not fit to hold a pencil and learn abacus since their finger muscles are still developing. Starting to learn abacus at a young age may also be too challenging for them which can result in losing interest and confidence in math. Students begin official schooling, when they attend elementary school, from the age of six. They learn and understand classroom rules and start to explore writing and finger counting. All these circumstances make a great opportunity for them to get involved in abacus and its basics.

Considerable improvement will have shown on students in just six months after basic mathematics training in addition and subtraction. Only simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are taught within math classes from Grade 1 to Grade 4. If students are capable of grasping the principals of abacus, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and even mental arithmetic is no challenge for them to absorb and learn in a year. Therefore, abacus is the best choice for training children’s calculation ability.
